Reporting to the Director, Legal & Corporate Affairs, goeasy (TSX: GSY) is seeking a Legal Counsel to provide legal and regulatory advice and guidance to the company on a variety of matters, including: marketing and advertising review, contract review, negotiation and interpretation, and ensuring compliance with all applicable laws.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Identifying, addressing and managing the business’ needs in support of strategic objectives; providing support and triage of affairs to Director, Legal & Corporate Affairs
  • Lead legal review in the areas of: marketing and advertising, consumer protection, secured lending, privacy, trademarks, customer resolutions and internal collections activities
  • Develop a strong and effective working relationship with all levels of Management in order to provide proper directions, influence and counsel with respect to legal matters; the incumbent should grow their sphere of influence
  • Apprise the Chief Legal Officer of issues, opportunities and threats related to legal items that arise
  • Advise on complex legal matters and effectively tailor recommendations and solutions to meet business goals as outlined by the Senior Leadership Team and as applicable to a publicly traded company
  • Identification of opportunities and issues that arise, and support the Director, Legal, and Chief Legal Officer in providing creative and business-oriented options and solutions to all levels of Management
  • Contribute to the ownership and development of policies and procedures under the domain of legal risk
  • Supporting framework for contract and vendor management, including contribution to contract review and negotiations processes, to protect goeasy’s interests and performance
  • Support and advise Management and provide legal direction on enabling execution in connection with applicable regulatory and governance requirements relating to existing and new service offerings, mergers and acquisitions, partnership and sponsorship initiatives and proposals that may evolve through strategic planning or in the normal course of goeasy’s growing business model
  • Support legal proceedings, whether by or against the company, to safeguard the legitimate interest of the company
  • Provide practical and pragmatic legal opinions covering a wide range of functional areas as required
  • Support the Legal & Corporate Affairs group for the maintenance and administration of all corporate records and registrations, particularly in the context of a public company with operations in all provinces

Qualification & Key Attributes:

  • 4-7 years of working experience, preferably in a dynamic corporate legal department
  • Combination of in-house experience supporting financial services and/or a public company, as well as marketing and advertising, will be preferred
  • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario, with demonstrated expertise in all relevant areas of the law
  • Exhibits a strong entrepreneurial spirit and is not afraid to challenge the status quo and introduce opportunities/ solutions and best practices that enhance the Company’s objectives
  • Projects a strong presence, with superior relationship building skills and proven success in connecting with different functional areas, partner groups and member groups.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills are key requirements for this
  • Confident and pro-active self-starter, skilled in taking initiative, assessing requirements, coming up with plans and taking the lead when implementing a solution or recommendation
  • Sound judgment and strong decision-making skills with an ability to be a person of influence to the executive team
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite and other business-related software
